Patrick MacPhee
I write speculative fiction with a focus on the perils of growing up and the search for meaning.

I've been reading speculative fiction since I could hold a book. Sure, I like the occasional "normal" book, but if reading a book can be compared to food, then the speculative element is the exotic spices that your neighbors can smell from down the street.
Eventually, all this reading reached critical mass and I tried writing. I wish I could tell you I was some teenage prodigy, but no. Those early stories weren't very good, but that didn't matter. I had fun writing those stories. It's an amazing feeling to lose yourself in the simple act of creation. More importantly, I kept writing and learning about writing, and I developed a simple motto for everything I write: how is this fun?
Recently, one of my stories won 1st Place in the Writers of the Future Contest: 4th Quarter, Issue 41. It's a dream come true for any artist to receive validation from established experts in the field. I look forward to learning even more about writing and publishing this April at the WotF workshop.
