As a young child, I frequently saw my mother engrossed in a forest's worth of science fiction and fantasy novels. Wanting to join in the fun, I read my first "big person" book, The Fellowship of the Ring, when I was eight. More importantly, I didn't just "read" the book; I played in Middle Earth like only a little kid can. I might linger for ten minutes on a single page, then check the maps, all while daydreaming about the other peoples and details of the world. I think it took me literally longer to reach Rivendell than Sam and Frodo. This magical experience hooked me on speculative fiction forever.
In my teens, I was bit by the writing bug and abandoned a degree in engineering to pursue a degree in English literature. I fell into teaching, first as a means to support my writing hobby/habit, but soon as a vocation where I'm lucky enough to go in every day and help young people become better versions of themselves.
